A Visit to Sami Anqawi’s House

This evening we went to an amazingly beautiful house, designed and lived in by the famous Saudi architect Dr. Sami Anqawi. This house was beyond belief to see, with a courtyard in the middle with a pool, and beautiful rooms all around. He has entertained many guests, including former President Jimmy Carter, at this house. He recently designed a new Islamic Cultural Center in Boston. Though the picture below doesn’t really do it justice, you can see a view of the middle area of the house.

After dinner we went to hear a presentation on Saudi women, and how they are doing gaining some rights. It was a good presentation, but we continue to hear the same thing—many Saudi women are in college because the government pays for it and even gives them spending money to go. The problem is there are not jobs available to them when they graduate (except for perhaps some education jobs, some nursing/medical positions, and maybe being a secretary). Saudi women can’t even be a sales clerk because they can’t sell any item to men. Another example of this inequity is the seating system at restaurants in Saudi Arabia. At a restaurant here you have a men’s only section (usually called the "singles" or men’s section), and you have a family section that women can sit in (with their children and husband, if they are present). This “family” section is often hidden behind smoked glass so that no one can see inside. A photo below shows the signs directing the Saudis to their entrances.

And, just for fun, here is the lobby of my hotel in Jeddah. Pretty nice!

We just got back from our musical performance which rocked by the way, and all through it I wished you were there, but instead you were in Saudi Arabia learning about the countary and stuff. So, as you know we all miss you and wish you were here .

Mr.Heiden,

I found it interesting that females can`t wait on men in stores and can`t sit in the same section of a restaurant as men. Why? Also, why is it blocked off from the mens section?

The program went well. Today we have a two hour delay.

Wow! What adventures! You are missing a two hour school delay this morning (Wednesday) for HSE and Alexandria. Lot of ice and some snow make for treacherous driving.

Dear Mark,

Thank you so much for your amazing blog! I am a close friend and fellow teacher to Kate Seichter who is traveling with your group from Connecticut. Keeping up with your blog is an awesome gift and a great way to feel connected to your trip. Tell Kate I miss her and I am so excited about all of the adventures she is having! A Question: Does Saudi Arabia forbid foreign travel/tourism? If they do, why?

If Saudi Arabia's mild wings are any good say "Cody and Jackson invented mild sausce and wings". If they're not say "Cody and Jackson can make better sausc, hot wings, and better mild wings than these...they're the inventers of them.

Your two best students,
Cody and Jackson

Jackson, Saudi Arabia is just like most countries in that they have some people with great wealth, and some people that are very poor. They do seem to have many people with great wealth, but there are a very high number of poor people here also (that we haven't really seen).

All, I am really glad the performance went well. I am very proud of all of you, and perhaps someone filmed it so I can see it in January.

Hello to you too Kynnedy.

And, Reid, I think you are neither mad or bad.

Stephanie, Saudi culture and religious beliefs are what make the current laws what they are. They may not make much sense to us, but that is the way it is here. Things are changing though, whether most of the Saudis like it or not...

Heather, you are quite welcome. I really enjoy doing blogs when I travel. The answer is no, they don't have tourist visas. The only way to get here is on business at the invitation of a Saudi company (or, if you are Muslim, you could come on the Hajj to Mecca/Medina).

Cody and Jackson can make better sausc, hot wings, and better mild wings than these...they're the inventers of them.

Jacob, the pool is indoors, and we got to see it because the company that we are traveling with is very rich and well-connected. So, we get to do all of these amazing things!

Stephanie and Kynnedy, I will call again--perhaps on Thursday or Friday.

Mr. Heiden,

what time are you probably going to call in? January feels like years to us(not that we're ready to get rid of Mrs. Emmons)!
Do they have cereal in Saudi Arabia? If so, what kinds do they have?
